POSITION SUMMARY & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Under the direction of the Director of the Center, the School Nurse performs clinical and administrative duties pertaining to the care of the children and required recordkeeping for the Center.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Provide nursing care that is based on standards of professional nursing practice that includes the ability to complete comprehensive physical and psycho-social assessments to determine appropriate nursing intervention based on standing medical orders and Clinical protocol;
Assess and treat acute illnesses and injuries and if necessary coordinate appropriate arrangements for treatment with a physician, specialist or at an area hospital;
Communicate directly with parents/guardians concerning care, treatment, or areas of concern during health screening, including recommending appropriate follow-up;
Be available for students providing services when necessary; Provide onsite services as necessary with availability to work remotely during operating hours.
Administration and dispensing of prescription and over the counter medications as authorized by parents and physicians, while observing for effectiveness, and monitoring for adverse side effects;
Adhere to precise documentation protocols for all medications on required administration records and electronic programs;
Establish, update, and recommend protocols that provide for crisis intervention for acute illnesses, injuries, and emotional disturbances;
Comply with Nurse Practice Act of New Jersey, and the professional regulations related to New Jersey Board of Nursing and the New Jersey Administrative Code that governs School Health;

Administrative Responsibilities:

Systematic collection, communication, and documentation of data pertaining to health status and nursing needs of students;
Track and document communicable illnesses and compose written communications for parents and staff notifications. Adhere to precise documentation protocols for all medications on required administration records and electronic programs;
Review and update child care health and safety policies in accordance with state and licensing standards.
Complete and submit all medical forms and reports, including student incident reports, in a timely manner;
Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and use discretion in sharing information within legal confines;
Participate in health education and disease prevention programs;
Coordinate health and safety workshops for children and parents.
Conduct safety drills and maintain data records in accordance with child care licensing standards.
Understand and follow established procedures for sanitation and hygiene in handling of body fluids, bloodborne pathogens according to OSHA guidelines, and the disposal of medical waste; and ensure staff understands, is trained, and follows the established procedures;
Immediately notify appropriate personnel of any evidence of student endangerment, including from substance abuse, child abuse, neglect, severe medical conditions or potential self-destructive behavior.

QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

RN or LPN Licensed in the State of New Jersey;
Prior experience working in a school environment with young children a plus;
Current CPR certification;
Prior experience in an emergency or critical care environment a plus.
Must be detailed oriented, thorough and accurate;
Must possess good judgment, tact, sensitivity, and discretion in the handling of confidential information, materials, and situations;
Must possess good social skills and ability to interact and work with a diverse school community including staff, students, guardians, and parents.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time. May also require bending, kneeling and leaning.
Potential exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids is possible. Ability to administer first aid.
Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds in weight.
Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Ability to speak and write concisely and demonstrate effective communication.
Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
Ability to be flexible and to work in a variety of settings and environments.
